National leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that any move to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) must be backed by firm guarantees on the future of Kano State and the protection of his political family.
Kwankwaso spoke on Wednesday at his residence in Kano while receiving leaders and supporters from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
He said he had not foreclosed the possibility of joining the APC but insisted that the survival of the present Kano administration and the welfare of his followers remained paramount.
“I never said I would not join the APC, but we must first be clearly assured of the future of the Kano State government before taking such a decision,” he stated.
“What becomes of our lawmakers and numerous supporters if we defect? These are critical issues that must be addressed.”
The former governor recalled previous political alliances in which his group helped to build governments only to be pushed aside afterwards.
“In the past, we joined others to form government, but we were later abandoned. That was why we left the party. Have they changed their attitude toward us now? Everybody knows the role we played then,” he added.
Kwankwaso lamented that no concrete commitment had been offered to protect the NNPP political structure in Kano.
“Up till this moment, nobody has given me any clear assurance that we will retain our government and sustain our political platform. I need to know exactly where I stand,” he said.
He also dismissed reports that he had endorsed plans by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to defect to the APC.
His media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, described the reports as false and mischievous, stressing that Kwankwaso remained fully committed to the ideals and vision of the NNPP.
