ADC Criticises Tinubu’s Absence During Armed Forces Remembrance Day

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, insisting that the annual commemoration should go beyond ceremonial gestures and reflect responsible governance that prioritises citizens’ safety.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasised that the physical and moral presence of the Commander-in-Chief is crucial for showing solidarity with the armed forces and the families of fallen soldiers, especially amid rising insecurity.

“Armed Forces Remembrance Day is a solemn national moment that demands visible leadership and deep reflection,” the statement read. “It is troubling that the President was absent on a day meant to honour those who sacrifice everything for Nigeria’s security. Leadership cannot be outsourced, postponed, or treated as ceremonial. It must place the lives of Nigerians above image management, foreign trips, or political convenience.”

The ADC commended the dedication of serving military personnel and recognised the sacrifices of military families, noting that “remembrance must go beyond wreaths and words” and should be reflected in decisive governance.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu, in a separate statement marking the day, paid tribute to fallen heroes and serving members of the Armed Forces. He acknowledged the sacrifices of soldiers and their families and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of military personnel.

“Today, we honour those who served Nigeria with courage and dedication. Their names might not always be remembered, but their bravery sustains our freedom and peace,” the President said.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed every January 15, commemorates the sacrifices of Nigerian military personnel, including those who lost their lives during the civil war and peacekeeping operations.
