The United States has formally designated the Muslim Brotherhood organisations operating in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon as terrorist entities, escalating its campaign against groups it considers threats to global security.
U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced the decision on Tuesday, saying it was carried out on the directive of President Donald Trump to dismantle the operational and financial networks of Muslim Brotherhood factions linked to violence and extremism.
According to the U.S. State Department, the Lebanese chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood has been listed as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group. Its leader, Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, was also placed under SDGT sanctions.
In a related move, the U.S. Treasury Department designated the Egyptian and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as SDGTs, accusing them of providing material and logistical support to Hamas.
Rubio described the action as the first phase of what he termed a “sustained and comprehensive effort” by Washington to curtail the influence of Muslim Brotherhood networks allegedly involved in regional instability and acts of violence.
“The United States will utilise all available tools to sever these organisations from the resources they rely on to support terrorism,” Rubio said.
He added that the measures would involve coordinated actions across U.S. government agencies, including asset freezes, travel restrictions and financial sanctions against individuals and entities associated with the designated groups.
The development signals a renewed hardline approach by the Trump administration toward Islamist organisations it views as security threats, particularly in the Middle East.
