Labour Party names Otti National Leader, wishes Obi well after ADC move

The Labour Party (LP) has formally recognised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader, while extending goodwill to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday, and signed by the National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha.

According to the communiqué, the meeting deliberated on matters bordering on the party’s stability, internal cohesion, growth, and future strategic direction.

“The National Working Committee, in a unanimous resolution, affirms its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the statement read.

The party also conveyed its best wishes to Peter Obi, expressing hope for success in his future political engagements and new party affiliation.

In the same resolution, the NWC confirmed former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the party’s National Chairman, citing the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which declared that the tenure of former chairman, Julius Abure, had elapsed.

The Labour Party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Usman and Nwokocha as the party’s legitimate national officers and accord them all rights and privileges as stipulated by the apex court.

The party further reaffirmed its commitment to conducting all congresses and its National Convention strictly in line with the provisions of its constitution, calling on members at all levels to actively participate in the process.

The NWC expressed appreciation to party members and Nigerians for their continued support, stressing that the Labour Party remains united, indivisible, and committed to building a nation founded on equity, social justice, and good governance.
