2026 Budget to Consolidate Tinubu’s Reforms, Drive Shared Prosperity — FG

The Federal Government has described the 2026 Appropriation Bill as a consolidation budget aimed at deepening the gains of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing economic and governance reforms.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in an opinion article titled “A Defining Moment for Nigeria: Why Staying the Course Matters,” published on Monday.
According to Idris, the 2026 budget—tagged Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity—is designed to strengthen reforms already delivering positive outcomes while accelerating tangible benefits for Nigerians.
“The budget represents a deliberate decision to build on what is working, solidify gains and ensure that shared prosperity becomes a lived reality for more Nigerians,” he said.
The minister noted that the past 31 months have been marked by tough but necessary policy choices to reverse years of economic stagnation and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
He said early signs of recovery are evident in expanding business activity, improving investor confidence, easing inflationary pressures and stronger external reserves, stressing that these indicators translate into improved livelihoods for citizens.
Idris emphasised the need for transparency and sustained engagement between government and the people, assuring Nigerians of consistent communication on policies, challenges and progress.
He highlighted key social and economic interventions, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative to reduce transportation costs, and youth empowerment programmes such as LEEP, the Jubilee Fellows Programme and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative.
On food security, the minister pointed to the recapitalisation of the Bank of Agriculture and increased mechanisation efforts as part of measures to boost productivity and stabilise food prices.
He also outlined major infrastructure projects underway, including the Coastal Highway, Sokoto–Badagry Expressway, AKK Gas Pipeline and expanded rail networks, aimed at improving connectivity and reducing logistics costs nationwide.
Addressing security, Idris said the Federal Government is strengthening personnel recruitment, upgrading equipment and enhancing international cooperation. He cited the recent rescue of abducted students in Kebbi and Niger states as evidence of renewed commitment.
Acknowledging public fatigue amid reforms, the minister assured Nigerians that government is accelerating relief measures while urging citizens to support nation-building by engaging constructively, safeguarding public assets and rejecting misinformation.
He commended President Tinubu’s leadership, noting that recent engagements with the United States have strengthened bilateral ties and Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts.
“As a new year begins, we have laid a new foundation. Now, we must build the house together,” Idris said, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to openness, accountability and effective public communication.
