The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on opposition political parties to engage the ruling party through constructive policy debates rather than resorting to insults, propaganda and political bitterness in the new year.

In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, the party said Nigeria’s opposition had consistently failed to present credible and workable alternatives capable of strengthening democratic competition.

Oladejo noted that democracy thrives on the contest of ideas and programmes, not on obstruction, incitement or what he described as institutional sabotage, warning that a weak and hollow opposition poses a serious threat to democratic stability.

“As Nigeria moves confidently into a new year, the opposition remains trapped in confusion—lacking unity, vision and a coherent policy framework. Noise and name-calling cannot replace ideas, nor can bitterness substitute for leadership,” he said.

The APC spokesman challenged opposition figures to embrace honesty and accountability, stressing that criminal allegations and ongoing legal proceedings should not be misrepresented as political persecution.

“In any serious democracy, the rule of law is not suspended because a politician feels offended. Criminal allegations are not acts of persecution, and courtrooms are not arenas for political melodrama,” Oladejo stated.

He accused the opposition of refusing to accept democratic outcomes and engaging in what he described as “international pity-shopping,” allegedly in pursuit of personal political ambitions at the expense of national interest.

Oladejo further urged opposition leaders to condemn terrorism, criminality and violence without ethnic or political bias, warning that selective condemnation erodes moral authority and undermines national unity.

While dismissing claims that Nigeria is a failed state, he said such narratives were often promoted by individuals seeking power without offering practical solutions.

According to him, the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu remains committed to governance, economic reforms, security enhancement and laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth despite prevailing challenges.

“A meaningful New Year resolution for the opposition should begin with honesty—telling Nigerians what they intend to do, not merely what they accuse others of doing wrong,” he said.

Oladejo added that Nigerians were no longer swayed by political grandstanding, noting that the electorate would continue to support leadership focused on delivery, accountability and nation-building.
