2026: Akpabio Assures Nigerians of End to Banditry, Insurgency

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed optimism that Nigeria will witness renewed peace, assuring citizens that banditry and insurgency will be decisively tackled in the new year and beyond.

Akpabio urged Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, to rally behind the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its efforts to restore security across the country. He said sustained collaboration with international partners would strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to defeat insurgents and criminal gangs.

The Senate President spoke during a church service at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, Ukana Ikot Ntuen, in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio called on Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and mutual understanding as foundations for national progress in 2026.

He appealed to citizens to set aside differences and work collectively towards a more equitable and peaceful nation, stressing that development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace.

“I want to wish all Nigerians a prosperous and peaceful New Year. I assure you that the coming year will usher in renewed peace in our country,” he said.

Drawing inspiration from the Christmas season, Akpabio added that just as the birth of Jesus Christ symbolises redemption for mankind, Nigeria would experience redemption from insecurity in the year ahead.

He also underscored the role of the family as the bedrock of unity and national cohesion, noting that peace at home translates to stability at the national level.

Akpabio’s remarks come against the backdrop of recent airstrikes by American forces targeting terrorist enclaves in parts of Sokoto State. While he avoided direct reference to the operation, he maintained that collective efforts and cooperation remain key to overcoming Nigeria’s security challenges.

The airstrikes have continued to generate mixed reactions, with opposition parties and analysts calling for clarity on Nigeria’s collaboration with the United States, even as some civil society groups hail the action as a significant blow against terrorists and bandits.
