Sokoto airstrikes aimed at terrorists, not civilians — Tambuwal

Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said that the airstrikes carried out by United States forces in parts of Sokoto State on Friday were directed at criminals and terrorist elements threatening the safety of residents.

Tambuwal, in a statement reacting to the development, described terrorism and banditry as serious threats to collective security, noting that innocent citizens have remained the worst victims of insecurity.

He urged residents of affected communities to remain calm, stressing that legitimate counterterrorism operations are designed to neutralise criminal networks and not to target civilians.

According to him, the protection of civilian lives remains paramount and central to all lawful security operations.

The former governor said he had taken note of reports surrounding the airstrikes, which he described as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States.

Tambuwal also commended the courage and professionalism of Nigerian security forces and their international partners, urging continued public support and cooperation.

He called on community leaders and residents to work closely with security agencies by sharing credible information and avoiding misinformation capable of heightening fear or tension.

Tambuwal expressed optimism that unity and vigilance would help restore lasting peace to Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.
