Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening as a suspected Boko Haram improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The explosion occurred around 6:10 p.m. while Muslim worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayer. Initial reports from residents indicate that several worshippers were either killed or injured, though official confirmation is yet to be provided.
ASP Nahum Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, told The Nation that he was on his way to the scene to assess the situation.
The blast has heightened fear in the state, particularly among residents of the Christian community as they prepare for the 2025 Christmas celebration. Security operatives have cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and to facilitate a preliminary assessment of the damage.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue. Further updates are expected as security and emergency teams respond to the incident.
