Governor Adeleke Orders Military-Backed Security Operations Following Ora Bandit Attacks

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has commiserated with the people of Ora Igbomina over recent banditry attacks, assuring that military-backed rescue and protection operations have been ongoing for the past three days.

Speaking after an emergency security council meeting on Wednesday evening, Governor Adeleke described the incident as saddening and a major breach of security, despite pre-emptive measures put in place over the last three months.

Reviewing developments with commanders from the police, army, secret service, and other paramilitary agencies, the Governor expressed confidence that the ongoing operations across border towns would prevent a recurrence of attacks and secure the release of a kidnapped retired customs officer.

“From the moment of the unfortunate incident, our security forces have launched rescue and protection operations. For the past three days, both the police, army, and DSS have been combing the areas for rescue while reviewing the security apparatus. A delicate operation is ongoing, and we do not want to jeopardise its integrity,” he said.

The Governor also announced plans to deploy refurbished armoured tanks and procure patrol vehicles to strengthen police and security operations in the state. Additionally, a review of the joint security patrol programme is underway and will be unveiled at the appropriate time.

In a bid to prevent further security breaches and possible spillovers from Kwara State, Governor Adeleke issued new operational guidelines for the Amotekun Security Service. The guidelines mandate close coordination with the police, warning that working in silos will no longer be tolerated.

He directed that an operational meeting be held between the police and Amotekun leadership to ensure proper coordination in future operations. “Amotekun services should always involve the police in their operations to ensure synergy and service support. I am happy that Amotekun will soon get back to the field under this new arrangement,” the Governor stated.

The Governor also advised the public to reduce late-night activities during the yuletide period, noting that criminals are targeting late-night gatherings. “We need to stick to daytime events to further protect ourselves,” he urged.

Commenting on the Governor’s directives, his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, said:
“Governor Adeleke is committed to ensuring the safety of all Osun residents. The new operational guidelines for Amotekun and the ongoing military-backed operations are part of a comprehensive strategy to secure our border towns and prevent further attacks.”

“I once again commiserate with victims of recent banditry attacks. We are working tirelessly to prevent a recurrence,” the Governor concluded.
