A community leader in Eruku, Kwara State, Shola Daniel, has expressed concern that the ongoing military presence in the area has not significantly improved security.
Eruku has been on edge in recent weeks following a series of violent attacks, including the assault on a Christ Apostolic Church, during which about 38 worshippers were kidnapped.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Daniel said that residents continue to live in fear despite the deployment of soldiers.
“I must be frank with you, the presence of the military in the community right now has not made much difference because, on a daily basis, farmers still have to go to their farms,” he said.
Daniel further noted the limitations faced by the military, saying, “The personnel reported to us say they have not been asked to go into the bush, and even if they were, how many farmers could they accompany to their farms? How well-armed could they be to confront bandits who are themselves heavily armed?”
The community leader also highlighted the persistence of attacks after the church incident, citing recent assaults on farmers and threats against traditional rulers.
“Just three or four days ago, some farmers were attacked on their farms. While some escaped, I believe one person is still missing,” he added.
Daniel acknowledged that government interventions following the spate of attacks have brought some relief, though challenges remain.
