Kanu Rejects Life Sentence, Moves to Challenge Ruling at Appeal Court

The legal team of the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has rejected the life sentence handed down to him by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, vowing to immediately file an appeal.

Kanu’s legal consultant, Alloy Ejimakor, made this known shortly after Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment.

During the proceedings, the prosecution team led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adegboyega Awomolo, urged the court to impose the death penalty, citing Section 12H of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013, which prescribes capital punishment for the offences listed in Counts One, Two, Four, Five and Six.

Justice Omotosho, however, opted for a life sentence, saying the court was inclined to temper justice with mercy despite the severity of the charges.

Ejimakor insisted that the judgment was unacceptable, stressing that all legal options would be deployed to overturn the conviction and sentence.
