Panic swept through Eruku, a major township in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Tuesday evening as terrorists launched a coordinated attack, forcing residents and commuters to flee into nearby bushes to escape a barrage of gunfire.
Eyewitnesses told Patriotic Insights News that the armed men arrived in large numbers and moved through sections of the community while shooting sporadically, throwing the entire town into confusion.
Residents said gunfire echoed across the area for several minutes as people scampered for safety in different directions.
A traveller returning from Niger State, who recorded a distressing voice note while hiding in the bush, described the terrifying moment commuters abandoned their vehicles.
In the shaky, panic–ridden recording, he said:
“This is 18-11-2025. We suddenly ran into them. Everybody has abandoned their cars and scattered into the bush. They are shooting… can you hear the gunshots? Please come to our rescue. Police should come. We are in trouble. They are already in the town now.”
Multiple commuters were seen in an accompanying video running through thick vegetation as bursts of gunfire rang in the distance.
Residents confirmed that parts of the community had been overtaken as the attackers advanced from one neighbourhood to another, firing intermittently.
As of press time, security agencies had not issued an official statement, and it remained unclear whether there were casualties or abductions.
The attack is the latest in a rising wave of insecurity across communities bordering Kwara, Kogi and Niger states, where incidents of bandit incursions and highway ambushes have escalated in recent months.
Worried residents and travellers have appealed to the military and police authorities to deploy urgent reinforcements to forestall further assaults.
