Opposition Raises Alarm as ADC Faults Takeover of PDP Secretariat

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has decried Tuesday’s forceful takeover of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat in Abuja, describing the incident as a direct assault on the nation’s democratic order.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, and made available to Patriotic Insights News, the party said the alleged invasion—reportedly carried out by agents linked to the APC-led Federal Government—portends grave implications for Nigeria’s political stability.

Abdullahi said the development reinforces fears about what he termed the ruling party’s growing “anti-democratic tendencies,” insisting that the forceful occupation marked “a new and dangerous low” for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He warned that the action sends a disturbing signal that state power could be deployed to settle partisan scores. “If armed operatives can be used to enforce factional control over an opposition party office, what assurance is there that labour unions, the media, students, or peaceful protesters will not suffer similar treatment?” he asked.

The ADC maintained that the episode should not be dismissed as an internal PDP matter, describing it instead as a major threat to Nigeria’s multiparty system, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.

Calling the incident part of a wider effort to weaken opposition voices, the party urged Nigerians and the international community to monitor developments closely and demand adherence to democratic norms.

It also called for an independent probe into the role of security agencies during the takeover, urging President Tinubu to check what it described as the excesses of his political allies to avoid further deterioration of the political climate.
