Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed support for recent remarks by United States President Donald Trump on the spate of killings in Nigeria.
President Trump had, on October 31, described Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” accusing the government of failing to act against persistent attacks on Christians. He reportedly directed the US Department of War to prepare for “possible action” to eliminate Islamic terrorists in Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, Kalu said Trump’s comments were factual, noting that the wave of violence had affected both Christians and Muslims across the country.
“If it’s a lie, then the answer is that it’s not a lie because he said the truth. Nigerians are being killed whether they are Christians or Muslims,” Kalu stated. “There are jihadists who just want to destroy Nigeria. We should blacklist them without pity so that they will be smoked out.”
The former governor revealed that he had discussed Nigeria’s security challenges with two former American presidents — one Republican and one Democrat — as well as six sitting US senators who, he said, had shown interest in assisting Nigeria to combat terrorism.
“Before President Trump says a word, the American intelligence community must have found out where these terrorists are located,” Kalu explained. “You can see that the Nigerian Air Force is already acting, possibly using intelligence shared by the US to bomb terrorist hideouts. That’s how it should be.”
Kalu, who described himself as “pro-America,” said part of the insecurity and instability across the world today could be traced to the US-led invasions of Libya and Iraq, which led to the proliferation of arms in Africa.
“When Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein were killed, it became a global problem because they were maintaining their borders. After their deaths, light and heavy weapons spread across the world, and we are suffering from it today,” he said.
He, however, dismissed claims that the US was targeting President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying Washington’s focus was on the jihadist groups responsible for Nigeria’s security woes.
“Nigerians are clapping and some political opponents are thinking that the US is after Tinubu’s government. No! They are going after the jihadists,” Kalu maintained.
