Aneke Assumes Command as Nigeria’s New Chief of Air Staff

Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke on Thursday officially assumed duty as the 23rd Chief of Air Staff (CAS), pledging to strengthen Nigeria’s airpower capabilities and deepen synergy across the Armed Forces in tackling the nation’s security challenges.

Speaking during the brief handing-over ceremony in Abuja, Aneke described his appointment as “a tremendous privilege and a solemn duty,” adding that he would lead with humility, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national security.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him to steer the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at a critical time, reaffirming the loyalty of the Force to the President, the Constitution, and the Nigerian people.

“Under my leadership, the Nigerian Air Force will remain willing, able, and ready to safeguard the nation’s airspace, strengthen inter-service cooperation, and support Nigeria’s peace, progress, and transformation,” Aneke assured.

The new Air Chief lauded the National Assembly for its role in enhancing institutional reforms and operational accountability within the Force, noting that legislative oversight has contributed significantly to the Air Force’s efficiency.

He also commended officers and personnel across the Armed Forces for their commitment and professionalism, promising to sustain the momentum by reinforcing discipline, welfare, and mission-driven leadership.

Aneke paid tribute to his predecessor, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, for steering the NAF through challenging security phases with “courage, professionalism, and vision,” particularly in counterterrorism operations.

In his valedictory remarks, the outgoing Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar, thanked God for a successful tenure, describing his period in office as “a defining chapter” in the Air Force’s history.

He hailed Aneke as a competent and disciplined officer capable of advancing the service’s operational and administrative standards.

“I urge you to sustain the ongoing reforms that promote combat readiness, enhance personnel welfare, and keep the Air Force people-focused and operationally effective,” Abubakar advised.

Aneke’s assumption of office marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Nigerian Air Force as it continues efforts to confront emerging security threats and consolidate national defence capacity.
