PDP Crisis Normal In Democracy — Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has dismissed claims that the party is on the verge of collapse as it prepares for its mid-term national convention in Ibadan.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, George said the disagreement over a proposed consensus national chairman is a “family issue” that does not threaten the survival of the party.

“There is no organisation that will not have one crisis or the other. The ability to manage, debate, agree and disagree is a measure of competence,” he said.

The comment followed reports that some PDP governors and elders have adopted former Minister of Special Duties, Turaki Tanimu, as consensus candidate — a move opposed by some stakeholders including former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido.

George, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, insisted that consensus does not preclude others from contesting.

“The fact that leaders supported one individual as consensus candidate does not mean others will not compete. Anybody who wants to contest should buy the form and be voted for,” he added.

He noted that the party’s constitution recognises consensus but bars no aspirant who meets requirements.

George also waved off concerns about recent defections, saying structures remain intact.

“Do you see the name of any governor when you vote? It is the party. The base is still strong,” he stressed.

On fears that litigation could stall the Ibadan convention, George said court cases are part of the process but will not stop the exercise.

He urged members to remain calm, strengthen internal democracy and focus on rebuilding.

“A leader is like a dustbin — people fire missiles at you. But if you remain calm and follow due process, people will see your competence and trust you,” he said.
