The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over what it described as a slide into violence within the state’s opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of its primary election.
In a statement on Wednesday by its chairman, Sunday Bisi, the ruling party said the tensions, threats, and street-level confrontations among APC factions have assumed a scale that threatens public peace.
Bisi said recent clashes and reckless utterances by APC chieftains and supporters show “a total breakdown of leadership and internal discipline” in the opposition camp.
“What is happening within the Osun APC today is not about democracy or service; it is a battle of desperation among politicians who have lost every sense of restraint,” he said.
He recalled earlier warnings that unchecked internal rivalry in the APC could spill into the public space and create avoidable unrest. According to him, public scenes in Ilesa, where rival camps reportedly issued threats in the open, and alleged assaults during a consultation in Apomu, were sufficient red flags.
The PDP chair also faulted what he called “defamatory outbursts” by a supporter of an APC aspirant who tagged a rival aspirant an assassin “without any reprimand from the party’s leadership”.
Bisi urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the APC national leader, to rein in the party’s Osun chapter to forestall what he called “a looming embarrassment” capable of destabilising the state.
He also tasked security agencies — the Police, DSS, and NSCDC — to take pre-emptive steps to prevent escalation.
“Governor Ademola Adeleke has laboured to secure the peace Osun enjoys today. We will not allow a few loose cannons to destroy that legacy,” Bisi said, urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
He added that while government will protect all citizens regardless of party lines, “anyone who attempts to import violence into Osun in the name of politics will face the full weight of the law.”
