Students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, have raised strong objections to the institution’s decision to relocate the faculty to the Ilesha Baruba campus in Baruten Local Government Area, citing escalating insecurity in the area.
In a statement issued by the National Association of Agriculture Students (NAAS), KWASU Chapter, the students described the relocation as “insensitive and ill-timed,” highlighting growing concerns about safety following recent banditry and kidnapping incidents in Ilesha Baruba and neighboring communities.
“We are reaching out to express our deep concern and displeasure regarding the recent decision by the management of Kwara State University to relocate the Faculty of Agriculture to Ilesha Baruba campus in Baruten Local Government of Kwara State,” the statement read.
The association pointed to the recent attack on Oke Ode as evidence of worsening security challenges in parts of Kwara State, stressing that the decision puts students at risk.
“Given the recent bandit attacks and kidnappings in Ilesha Baruba, coupled with the attack on Oke Ode, we are worried about our safety,” the students added.
NAAS urged the university management to reconsider the relocation, stressing that student welfare and security must take precedence over administrative plans.
“As students of Kwara State University, we are disappointed in the management’s decision without considering our well-being. We urge the authorities to prioritize our safety,” the statement concluded.
Attempts to obtain a comment from KWASU management on the issue were unsuccessful as of press time.
