Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has renewed the call for constitutional recognition of traditional rulers, saying it has become imperative to strengthen their roles in national unity and grassroots governance.
Speaking at the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) meeting held recently in Lagos, Uzodinma said the agitation for constitutional roles was not a privilege but a necessary demand given the stabilising influence of monarchs across communities.
The Governor, who delivered the keynote address at the event, described the theme of the meeting—focused on the relevance of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and communal order—as timely and reflective of the realities in the country.
He noted that traditional rulers continue to shoulder critical responsibilities that promote cohesion, stability, and governance at the community level, adding that it was time such functions received formal recognition in the nation’s constitution.
“The time has come to make things right — not by creating new roles, but by granting legal status to what already exists,” Uzodinma said. “The traditional institution remains a vital pillar in the nation’s power structure, attracting men and women of distinction from politics, the military, academia, and the legal profession.”
He, however, urged monarchs to remain apolitical to safeguard their integrity and maintain public trust in the institution.
Uzodinma emphasized that giving constitutional recognition to traditional rulers would not only strengthen the nation’s governance system but also reinforce peace-building efforts and cultural preservation across Nigeria.
