New INEC Chairman Faces Immediate Test with FCT, Governorship Elections
The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, has been warned that upcoming elections, including the FCT off-cycle governorship poll, will present an early and significant test of his leadership.
Speaking on Arise Television on Thursday, Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, described the challenge as “urgent,” noting that the transition process at INEC must be completed swiftly.
“Professor Amupitan has an impressive track record and the professional qualifications needed for the role,” Itodo said. “But leading INEC requires more than personal credentials; it demands courage to withstand political pressure and the ability to manage a complex team of Electoral Officers and Resident Commissioners.”
Itodo added that with the FCT election and other governorship contests approaching, the new chairman’s ability to lead effectively will be closely observed.
The comments come just a day after Prof. Amupitan’s nomination, highlighting the immediate expectations placed on him to ensure credible and fair elections.
