Sowore Alleges Southeast Politicians Hindering Kanu’s Release Over Political Interests

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is being influenced by certain South-East politicians who fear that his release could undermine their political ambitions.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday, Sowore said discussions about Kanu’s release date back to the early days of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, when some political actors in the region allegedly opposed freeing the IPOB leader to protect their interests in upcoming elections, particularly in Imo State.

Despite public endorsements for Kanu’s release from some leaders, Sowore noted that many privately hold opposing views. Efforts to coordinate with South-East governors and other political figures, he said, were largely ignored.

“I declared that Kanu’s ordeal stems from some individuals in the Southeast who decided his release would jeopardize their political careers and future. I know this as far back as when Tinubu became president. I reached out to Soludo—no response. Alex Otti—no response. Peter Obi was reportedly in Rome,” Sowore said.

He commended Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for supporting Kanu’s release, recalling that the lawmaker had faced political challenges for previously standing as surety for the IPOB leader.

Sowore added that while many young Nigerians have consistently demanded Kanu’s freedom, there remains no unified position among South-East political, traditional, and religious leaders. He also suggested that the Nigerian government is resisting growing public pressure for Kanu’s release.
