NMCN Urges Nurses to Serve at Home, Warns Against Working in War Zones

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has cautioned nurses against relocating to countries currently experiencing conflict in their bid to “japa” from Nigeria.

The Council called on newly graduated nurses to contribute to the development of Nigeria’s healthcare system instead of seeking employment abroad.

Speaking during the induction and oath-taking ceremony of graduating nurses from Elizade University, the Registrar of NMCN, Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, advised the professionals to avoid volatile nations such as Russia, Ukraine, and Israel.

Represented by Dr. Olukemi Awe, a Council director, Dr. Alhassan told the 69 graduates in attendance: “Your choice to enter this noble profession is not just a career path but a calling. You have the privilege to serve anywhere in the world, but we urge you to remain in Nigeria. Do not ‘japa’ for now. We still need your skills and dedication here.”

He added, “If you still desire to go abroad, please avoid conflict zones. Let your achievements today mark the beginning of a meaningful career, not the end of your contribution to the nation’s healthcare sector.”

The Council’s appeal aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare workforce and reduce the brain drain affecting the sector.
