Deputy Speaker Escapes Sit-at-Home Enforcers to Attend Abuja Forum

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, yesterday revealed how he had to take a detour through Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to evade enforcers of the weekly sit-at-home order in the South East and make it to Abuja for an official engagement.

Kalu, an indigene of Abia State, was attending a consultative forum of the House Committee on Constitution Review at the Wells Carlton Hotel, Asokoro, Abuja. He arrived two hours behind schedule, attributing the delay to his unusual travel route.

“My sincere apologies for arriving behind schedule. I had to route my journey from the South East through Uyo to catch a flight to Abuja. It was the only way to beat the sit-at-home enforcers,” Kalu said during his opening remarks.

The Deputy Speaker, however, did not specify the exact location in the South East from which he was traveling. He reassured that South East governors are collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the region and across Nigeria.

Kalu’s experience underscores the challenges faced by residents of the five South East states, who have been under a sit-at-home order every Monday, enforced by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for several years.
