Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has made an emotional appeal to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing demolition of Igbo-owned houses and offices in Lagos State, calling the wave of destruction “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

Kalu spoke on Friday during a reception held in honour of President Tinubu, who was in Aba to commission multiple landmark projects executed by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

“The destruction of homes and offices belonging to the Igbo community in Lagos makes our hearts bleed,” Kalu said. “Mr. President, I appeal to you to intervene and ask the Lagos State Governor to allow our brothers to regularize their documents instead of destroying their properties.”

He added, “Let them come forward and correct their documents. It pains us deeply to witness homes being demolished at this time.”

The Deputy Speaker also lauded President Tinubu’s inclusiveness, citing the appointment of an Igbo man as one of the first commissioners of finance in his administration and another as Chief of Naval Staff, describing these decisions as proof of the President’s commitment to national unity.

Kalu further commended Governor Otti for his developmental projects across Abia State, urging continued efforts to transform the lives of Abians.

The appeal comes amid rising tensions over property demolitions in Lagos, with residents and political leaders calling for a more compassionate and legally fair approach to urban planning enforcement.
