2027: APC Mocks Jonathan’s Comeback Bid

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday dismissed speculations that former President Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election, describing it as a desperate ploy by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Spokesman of the party, Seye Oladejo, in a statement on Tuesday, said the alleged plan by PDP chieftain, Professor Jerry Gana, to present Jonathan as the party’s flag bearer is nothing more than a nostalgic gamble lacking in substance.

According to Oladejo, Jonathan would need “an overdose of good luck” to stand any realistic chance of reclaiming the presidency, stressing that elections are won on ideas, competence and proven delivery, not “recycled rhetoric.”

He said: “Prof. Gana’s certainty that a particular individual will emerge as PDP candidate or that Nigerians are clamouring for a return to the past is premature and amounts to political theatre. The PDP should desist from lawless campaigns before the official ban on electioneering is lifted.”

The APC also warned that attempts to impose candidatures showed the opposition party’s undemocratic tendencies, while questioning Gana’s political relevance after decades in public life.

Oladejo urged Jonathan to enjoy his retirement rather than risk eroding the goodwill he earned by peacefully conceding defeat in 2015.

“If he chooses to run, President Jonathan will need more than an overdose of good luck to stand a chance. The landmines before him are numerous – legal, record-based and fundamental questions of capacity,” he added.

The Lagos APC reaffirmed its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, citing ongoing reforms, infrastructure renewal and social programmes as evidence of a government focused on the future rather than revisiting the past.

Meanwhile, Gana had at the PDP Congress in Minna, Niger State, declared that Jonathan would contest and return to Aso Rock in 2027, insisting that Nigerians were clamouring for his comeback.
