Obi decries bandits’ attack in Kwara, seeks security emergency

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, today condemned the killing of 12 persons, including the Baale of Ogbayo, in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, describing it as “another mindless act of violence.”

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed that bandits stormed the Ogbayo community around 7 a.m. on Sunday, opening fire on local vigilantes and residents. At least 12 people were killed while four others sustained injuries.

Police spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment, while the remains of the deceased had been evacuated.

Reacting via his official X handle on Tuesday, Obi, a former Anambra State Governor, expressed deep sorrow over the attack and urged urgent measures to stem the cycle of bloodshed.

“It is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the tragic killings in Oke-Ode, Kwara State, where innocent lives, including vigilantes and the Baale of Ogbayo, were cut short in yet another mindless act of violence from armed bandits terrorising our nation. Once again, our nation is thrown into mourning,” he said.

Obi said the repeated attacks underscore the need for government to declare a national emergency on security.

“No Nigerian should have to live in fear in their own home. We cannot continue to normalise tragedy,” he added.

The former presidential candidate extended condolences to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the people of Kwara State, and families of the deceased.

“My heart goes out to the Governor and the people of Kwara State. I reassure you that you are not alone. And to the grieving families, please accept my deepest condolences. May you find strength and comfort in this difficult time, and may the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” Obi prayed.
