Kwankwaso: I’ve Not Defected to APC
Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, yesterday dismissed reports linking him with a planned defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso, who was also a former Defence Minister, described the claims as baseless and without foundation.
There had been strong speculations earlier in the day suggesting that he had submitted a letter of intent to the APC and held discreet talks with the party’s National Chairman ahead of the 2027 general elections.
But in a statement signed and released through his media team, the NNPP leader said:
“We have been alerted to some online statements suggesting that we have submitted a letter of intent to join a political party in the country.
We wish to clarify that we have not made any such submission to any party. The public is therefore advised to rely only on information issued through our official channels.”
The clarification, however, has not stopped the fresh wave of speculation within political circles, especially as both APC and opposition parties intensify alignments in the countdown to 2027.
Insiders in Abuja hinted that while no formal move has been made, the ruling party is keen on consolidating its base in the North, with Kwankwaso seen as a potential asset.
Political observers note that in Nigeria’s fluid political environment, public denials often precede major realignments.
For now, Kwankwaso insists he remains firmly with the NNPP.
