Tinubu as Intelligent, Strategic as Trump, Says Ex-NIIA DG

A former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, has likened President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intelligence and strategic depth to that of former United States President Donald Trump.

Speaking on Channels Television on Friday,Akinterinwa dismissed concerns over Tinubu’s absence at the ongoing 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), stressing that it should not be interpreted as weakness on the global stage.

He maintained that Tinubu is “as intelligent, if not more intelligent, than Trump,” adding that the Nigerian leader is also “more cautious and more strategic in his approach.”

According to him, diplomatic protocols often dictate interactions among world leaders, noting that a vice president representing a president cannot command the same level of access.

“In diplomacy, water must always find its own level. A vice president at such forums cannot easily interact with presidents, who are his seniors in protocol,” he said.

The ex-NIIA boss further explained that global politics, particularly U.S. attitudes, often shape relations. He warned that Trump, whom he described as unpredictable, could easily embarrass leaders of countries like Nigeria that pursue independent foreign policies.

“Trump acts before he thinks. He wants to be seen as primus inter pares in global politics and often resents nations charting independent courses,” Akinterinwa added.

Tinubu attended the 78th UNGA in 2023 where he delivered Nigeria’s national statement. He, however, delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him in both the 79th (2024) and the current 80th sessions.
