COREN Intensifies Fight Against Quack Engineering, Strengthens Oversight Nationwide
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has unveiled measures to tighten regulation, curb quackery, and improve engineering oversight across the country, with particular focus on the North-West.
Professor Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, COREN President, said the Council is moving beyond dialogue to take concrete steps to address critical challenges in the sector, including the use of substandard materials, building collapses, and the rising incidence of unqualified practitioners.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja by COREN’s Head of Corporate Advancement and Public Relations, Mrs. Ojonugwa Haruna, citing remarks made by Abubakar at the Regional Engineering Stakeholders Summit in Kano.
Key reforms outlined include the implementation of the Engineering Regulations Monitoring and Enforcement (ERM&E) framework, the establishment of investigation panels, and the creation of Engineering Disciplinary Tribunals to prosecute violators.
Professor Abubakar emphasized collaboration with law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies, and industry stakeholders to ensure strict compliance. “The North-West is an economic powerhouse, and its growth must rest on a foundation of safety, standards, and quality. This summit is about concrete action—building a framework to prevent engineering failures, strengthen oversight, and unlock the region’s industrial potential,” he said.
COREN also announced sector-specific strategies to align engineering practice with global standards, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture, and housing.
Speaking at the event, COREN Registrar, Professor O.A.U. Uche, lauded the North-West Regional Steering Committee (RSC) for promoting decentralization and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to reforms such as Outcome-Based Engineering Education (OBE), mandatory Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and the Engineering Residency Programme (ERP) aimed at bridging gaps between academia and industry.
“Effective regulation depends on active engagement with stakeholders. Our strength lies in partnerships that drive sustainable engineering excellence,” Uche said, assuring that the COREN Secretariat would continue supporting RSCs in implementing these reforms.
Chairman of the North-West RSC, Engr. Habu Gumel, represented by Engr. Ibrahim A. Maimaja, described the Committee as a landmark initiative bringing COREN’s regulatory framework closer to grassroots institutions.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr. Marwan Ahmed, applauded COREN’s reform agenda and pledged the State Government’s full cooperation for effective implementation.
