Wike to Commission Major Road Projects in Akwa Ibom Today
Akwa Ibom State is set to witness the commissioning of key road infrastructure projects today, Wednesday, September 24, 2025, by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The announcement was made by Dr. Essien Ndueso, Senior Special Adviser on Research and Documentation to Governor Umo Eno, during a pre-commissioning inspection on Tuesday.
Among the projects to be commissioned is the 14.13km Ikot Esu–Azumini road, linking Ika Local Government Area to Azumini in Abia State, and the 1.53km Ikot Udom internal roads, which serve as access routes to the hometown of the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.
Dr. Ndueso described the roads as strategically important for boosting economic activities across both Akwa Ibom and Abia states. He noted that the projects, initiated during former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s tenure, were completed under Governor Umo Eno’s administration.
The Ikot Esu–Azumini road stretches from Ikot Esu–Otomo in Ika LGA, Akwa Ibom State, to Azumini Ndoki community in Ukwa East LGA of Abia State. While the initial phase of the project faced protests from Azumini Ndoki residents over territorial concerns, local authorities have assured that the construction is fully within the legal framework and aims to enhance regional development.
Chairman of Ika LGA, Utibe Nwoko, urged residents of Abia to appreciate the economic benefits of the project instead of worrying about encroachment, describing the initiative as a milestone in inter-state cooperation.
