Bida Poly suspends ASUP activities over strike, exams disruption
The Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, has suspended the activities of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Bida chapter, following the indefinite strike declared by lecturers.
Registrar of the institution, Hussaini Enagi, announced the decision yesterday, citing rising tension and negative security reports on campus. He directed all union members to comply with the council’s order.
The union had, on Monday, resumed an indefinite strike over 18 months of unpaid excess workload allowances. ASUP, led by its chairman, Kolo Joshua, ordered members to boycott examinations and vacate the campus, accusing management of intimidation and neglect of staff welfare.
Joshua maintained that the action was legitimate, saying:
“Our struggle is anchored on justice, and protected under the relevant labour laws.”
Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Baba Haruna, appealed to the union to respect the rights of staff unwilling to join the strike, even as the governing council urged lecturers to suspend their action in the interest of students.
Reacting, ASUP National President, Shammah Kpanja, faulted the council’s decision, describing the suspension of union activities as “disturbing.”
He said the union was appalled by reports and visuals of soldiers supervising examinations in the polytechnic, stressing that the national body stands firmly with the Bida chapter and will escalate the matter to the appropriate authorities.
