Oyo Assembly warns against politicising mandate, reaffirms confidence in Makinde

The Oyo State House of Assembly has cautioned its members against using the legislative platform to curry political favour as the state enters a new political season.

Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, who presided over Tuesday’s plenary after a six-week recess, reminded lawmakers that their primary mandate was given to them by their constituents, not the executive or the legislature.

“We are all answerable to our people. It will be an act of irresponsibility to do anything contrary to the trust reposed in us. If some members want to use the Assembly to gain sympathy or advantage because of their shortcomings in quality representation, it will not work,” Ogundoyin said.

He urged members to return to their constituencies, engage their people, and use proper legislative tools such as motions, petitions, and oversight to push for development projects rather than turning the Assembly into a political theatre.

The House, however, passed a vote of confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde for what it described as his administration’s “bold and visible strides” in infrastructure, governance reforms, and local government development.

Hon. Olajide Akintunde (Lagelu) commended the successful oversight visits to all 33 local governments, noting that they provided useful insights into project implementation.

Hon. Olatunde Kehinde (Akinyele II) highlighted ongoing strategic road projects, while Majority Leader Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin praised the launch of the Oyo State AfCFTA Implementation Strategy, which he described as visionary.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi added that the administration’s interventions in health, education, and infrastructure have touched lives across the state.

The lawmakers, in a unanimous decision, formally endorsed the policies and direction of the Makinde-led government.

Ogundoyin, in his closing remarks, assured that the 10th Assembly remains committed to good governance, transparency, and quality representation without witch-hunting or bias.
