Ogun warns coastal residents against borehole, well water use over looming floods
The Ogun State Government has cautioned residents of low-lying and coastal communities against consuming borehole and well water between late September and mid-October as a precaution against possible contamination from floodwaters.
Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, who gave the warning in a statement by the ministry’s Information Officer, Rotimi Oduniyi, said the advisory is part of the 2025 Midterm Flood Alert issued by the state.
He explained that the period coincides with the second phase of flooding in Ogun, which often lasts about two weeks, adding that tidal lock and rain overflow from rivers such as Ilo, Iju, Owa, and Yemule could worsen the situation.
According to him, communities along Isheri, Warewa, Akute, Ayetoro, Itele, Makun, Oni, Iwopin, Igele, Ifaara, Ebute-Imobi, Tungeji Island, and Agosasa are likely to be affected.
The commissioner noted that high inflows from northern Nigeria and the Benin Republic, coupled with possible release of water from the Oyan Dam, could aggravate flooding in the state.
He further revealed that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected 204mm of rainfall in September, 190mm in October, and 93mm in November.
Oresanya assured that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is on standby for evacuations and temporary resettlement, while urging residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.
He also advised fish farmers in plains such as Eriwe, Yemule, Ilase, and Ayegbami to harvest their fish promptly to avoid huge losses.
