Kaduna Govt Orders Private Schools to Halt Fee Hikes Without Approval

The Kaduna State Government has directed private school proprietors to stop raising tuition fees without prior approval from the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA).

A circular dated September 7, 2023, obtained by news sources, revealed that some schools had been increasing fees in violation of existing regulations. Reference number KSSQAA/GEN.37/VOL.I reminded school owners that their approval documents strictly forbid any fee increment or institutional upgrade without clearance from the regulator.

Mercy Bainta Kude, Director of the Private Schools Department, stated:

“No proprietor should increase school fees or upgrade their institution without KSSQAA’s approval. Proprietors must adhere to regulatory requirements, especially as the State Government is reducing fees in public schools.”

The circular outlined strict procedures for fee increments:

Any previous increment must have been in effect for at least three years.

Approval must originate from a PTA meeting with a proper quorum.

Express approval from the KSSQAA Director-General is required, backed by a formal application specifying the proposed increase.

PTA meeting minutes (typed) and attendance sheets (handwritten) must accompany the application.

Reasons for the increment must be clearly stated.

Current enrolment across all levels and both old and proposed fees must be included.

The government emphasized that school proprietors must remain informed about evolving regulations in the education sector.
