Inferno Destroys Shops at Popular Kara Market, Kwara
A midnight inferno on Wednesday destroyed 28 shops at the popular Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The fire, which reportedly started around 1:35 a.m., razed 22 plank shops and six container shops before operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service curtailed its spread.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, attributed the outbreak to negligence by a shop owner who allegedly cooked late at night but failed to properly extinguish the fire.
“The fire later reignited and spread to other shops because the area had many wooden structures. Our firefighters arrived promptly and prevented further destruction, saving hundreds of shops and goods,” Adekunle said.
He urged traders to be cautious with fire, especially in markets where highly flammable items are stored, and to always ensure that cooking or lighting sources are completely put out before closing for the day.
The Kara Market has a total of 323 shops, including wooden structures and kiosks.
