Kwara APC Suspends Iliyasu Moro Just 24 Hours After He Regretted Supporting AbdulRazaq
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has suspended one of its senior chieftains, Alhaji Iliyasu Ibrahim Moro, barely a day after he openly regretted backing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in 2019.
Moro made his remarks on Monday during a live political programme, Aríse la rí kà, on SBS 96.9 FM Ilorin. He described his support for AbdulRazaq as a “grave mistake” and said the O to ge movement that brought the governor to power had failed the people.
“The truth is bitter, but it must be told,” Moro said. “The O to ge struggle, which we believed would bring a new dawn, has failed. The government has not lived up to the promises we fought for.”
APC leadership in Moro Local Government responded quickly. Jimoh Raji, Chairman of APC in Oloru Ward, announced Moro’s indefinite suspension, citing “anti-party and anti-government activities” over the past year and a half. The statement said the State Executive Council is expected to ratify the decision.
Moro’s suspension exposes cracks within Kwara APC, which came to power in 2019 after toppling the Saraki political dynasty. The O to ge campaign, widely embraced across the state, promised accountability, transparency, and people-centred leadership promises Moro now says remain largely unmet.
In his interview, Moro also raised concerns about regional marginalisation, pointing out that Kwara North, particularly Moro Local Government, has been sidelined in state politics. He criticised stalled projects, including the N33 billion Kwara Hotel rehabilitation, and alleged mismanagement of palliative rice distribution.
“If we had known the style of governance that would follow, we would have rejected AbdulRazaq’s candidacy,” Moro said. “Now, hunger and disappointment tell the story of our failure.”
The APC chieftain urged equity and justice ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that continued marginalisation of his constituency could worsen.
Moro’s suspension is the latest sign of internal tensions in Kwara APC, raising questions about party unity and governance as the state moves closer to the next general elections.
