Presidency will revert to North in 2031, says Gov Bago
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has assured that political power will return to the North after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu completes his tenure in 2031.
Bago, who spoke during an interview on TVC, urged Northerners with presidential ambitions to exercise patience until the rotational arrangement between the North and South runs its course.
“When he (President Tinubu) completes his eight years, power will return to the North. That is when northerners who wish to contest can legitimately do so,” the governor declared.
He emphasised that the North remains fully committed to supporting Tinubu’s administration, noting that Niger State stands firmly behind the President.
“In Niger State, there is no dissenting voice. Nigeria enjoys relative stability today because we have embraced a rotational understanding in governance. The South will take its turn, and then the North will also take its turn,” he said.
Bago dismissed speculations about an early shift of power back to the North, describing such agitation as unfair and destabilising.
“He (Tinubu) has spent only two years in office, yet some people are already saying power should come back to the North. How? We had our chance, and now it is the South’s turn. So, we will continue to give the President our full support,” the governor added.
