Tinubu Commissions Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters, Reaffirms Commitment to Judiciary

President Bola Tinubu has commissioned a newly completed 10-unit Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Abuja, describing the project as a strategic investment in the rule of law and judicial independence.

Represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the President said the housing estate is part of a series of judicial infrastructure projects marking the third anniversary of his administration.

Tinubu said the project demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare, independence and efficiency of the judiciary, stressing that a functional justice system requires not only sound laws and competent judges but also adequate infrastructure.

He noted that the housing project was funded as a special Federal Government intervention, separate from the judiciary’s statutory budgetary allocation.

The President said providing secure accommodation for judges would strengthen judicial independence, improve service delivery and reinforce public confidence in the justice system.

Tinubu also announced plans to expand judicial infrastructure in the area, with additional land allocated for judges of the National Industrial Court, the Federal High Court, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory and the Code of Conduct Bureau.

He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for successfully delivering the project and urged state governments to invest more in judicial infrastructure within their jurisdictions.

Speaking at the event, Wike called on governors to support the development of federal courts located in their states, arguing that such institutions primarily serve residents of the host states.

He maintained that providing infrastructure for the judiciary strengthens, rather than compromises, judicial independence.

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, described the new quarters as a major milestone in improving judges’ welfare and ensuring a secure environment for the administration of justice.

She said adequate housing protects judicial officers from undue influence and contributes to the delivery of impartial justice.

The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, disclosed that the project is part of a larger 40-unit judges’ housing development in Katampe.

He said the estate comprises fully furnished five-bedroom duplexes with supporting facilities, including an event centre, recreational areas, internal roads, power and water infrastructure, perimeter fencing and security installations.

The commissioning comes a day after the inauguration of the new Court of Appeal complex in Abuja, highlighting the administration’s continued investment in judicial infrastructure.
