2027: NDC Zones Presidential Ticket to South, North to Produce Candidate in 2031

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has officially zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the Southern region of the country, while reserving the 2031 presidential slot for the North.

The decision was reached on Saturday during the party’s national convention held in Abuja, following the adoption of a motion moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.

The convention also ratified members of the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, after a motion presented by Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central.

Party leaders said the zoning arrangement was aimed at promoting equity, fairness and balanced political representation between the Northern and Southern regions of the country.

Earlier, Buba Galadima, an ally of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had hinted that the party had already settled for the South ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

“We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the South. There is no controversy about it,” Galadima reportedly stated.

He further disclosed that the NDC would conduct open primaries to determine its eventual candidate, dismissing the possibility of adopting a consensus arrangement.

The latest development comes amid ongoing political realignments and coalition talks among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers believe the zoning decision may strengthen the growing calls for power rotation and regional balance in the country’s leadership structure.
