Faleke Mobilises Lagosians for Hamzat, Signals 2027 Succession Battle

The race for the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State has begun to gather momentum as James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives, has thrown his weight behind the state Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, urging residents to support his emergence as the next governor.

Faleke, who represents Ikeja Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Finance, made the call in a post on social media on Friday, effectively setting the tone for what observers describe as an early contest for succession in the state.

“As we prepare for party primaries next month, I urge all our supporters in Ikeja Federal Constituency and Lagos State to support Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the next Governor of Lagos State from 2027 to 2035, by God’s grace,” he wrote.

Hamzat, who currently serves as deputy to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is widely believed to enjoy the backing of the powerful Governors’ Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making organ of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

Political analysts say Faleke’s open endorsement may further consolidate Hamzat’s position within the ruling party ahead of the primaries, especially as internal alignments begin to crystalise.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled April 23 to May 30 for political parties to conduct their primaries and submit candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2027.
