Osun Opposition Kicks as APC Campaign Chief’s Comment Sparks Outrage

Fresh political tension has emerged in Osun State following widespread criticism of remarks made by Oluwole Oke, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress campaign council for the August 15 governorship election.

Oke, who represents Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, came under fire after a video surfaced online showing him addressing supporters in Esa Oke, where he declared that anyone not aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should be ready to face the consequences.

Speaking in Yoruba during the campaign gathering, the federal lawmaker said he remained firmly in Tinubu’s political camp and suggested that those outside it would have themselves to blame for whatever followed.

The comment immediately triggered condemnation from opposition figures and residents, many of whom described the statement as provocative and unsuitable for the political atmosphere ahead of the governorship poll.

A prominent member of the Accord Party, Pelumi Olajengbesi, faulted the remark, saying democratic contests should be driven by persuasion rather than intimidation.

According to him, threats against voters or political opponents only reveal fear and lack of confidence in popular support.

Other reactions also flooded social media, with many residents insisting that no form of political pressure would influence the will of the electorate.

Some commentators maintained that Osun voters are politically aware and capable of making independent choices, while others warned against statements capable of overheating the polity.

Calls were also made for security agencies to closely monitor campaign rhetoric as political activities intensify across the state.

The governorship election is expected to witness a keen contest between APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and incumbent governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term in office.
