Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned state governors that the ongoing crisis in the Middle East may worsen inflation in Nigeria, especially through higher energy and transport costs, urging them to strengthen support for vulnerable citizens.

The President gave the warning on Sunday while hosting Kashim Shettima and 23 governors at his Lagos residence during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran could further reduce citizens’ purchasing power.

He noted that labour unions and other groups may soon demand additional government intervention because of the likely economic pressure.

The President also called on governors to remain committed to policies that directly improve citizens’ welfare, while intensifying collaboration with the Federal Government to combat insecurity across the country.

Tinubu disclosed that part of his recent discussions in the United Kingdom focused on securing equipment and international support for Nigeria’s security operations.

He added that he recently held talks with Emmanuel Macron on modern security support and defence cooperation.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, thanked the President for ongoing interventions in states and said governors were making progress on discussions around state police.

He said the forum would forward its recommendations to the National Assembly for legislative action.
