NYSC Mourns Corps Member’s Death, Confirms Staff Under Probe
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed grief over the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, confirming that a staff member is under investigation in connection with the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the scheme said it was “deeply saddened” by the development.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the peaceful repose of her soul,” the statement read.
NYSC disclosed that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, adding that the individual concerned has been taken into custody.
The Ogun State Police Command also confirmed the probe, with spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stating that the case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
While authorities have yet to officially establish the cause of death, sources allege that Ariyo may have died from complications linked to an abortion, with reports suggesting that an NYSC official allegedly connected to the case is in custody.
Reaffirming its position, the NYSC said it maintains a strict code of conduct and will not tolerate any form of misconduct.
“The welfare, safety, and dignity of our Corps Members remain paramount,” the scheme stated, urging the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
The incident comes amid heightened concern following the recent death of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, also in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, whose cause of death remains unknown.
Authorities say investigations into both cases are ongoing.
