World Food Day: Remi Tinubu Urges Investment in Agricultural Innovation, Support for Farmers

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased investment in agricultural innovation, stronger support for farmers and the adoption of sustainable farming practices to strengthen food security and improve nutrition across the country.

She stressed the need to combine modern agricultural innovations with traditional knowledge to build resilient food systems and secure a healthier future for generations to come.

The First Lady made the call in her message commemorating World Food Day 2026, observed on Friday, October 16, with the theme, “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”

According to her, achieving sustainable food security requires collective efforts to improve agricultural productivity, reduce food waste and promote practices that guarantee access to safe and nutritious food.

Mrs Tinubu emphasised that innovation should complement rather than replace indigenous knowledge and traditional agricultural practices that have sustained communities for generations.

“As we observe World Food Day 2026 with the theme, ‘Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow,’ we are reminded of the need to embrace innovation while preserving the traditional knowledge that strengthens our food systems,” she said.

She also highlighted the contributions of Nigerian farmers to national food production and household welfare, urging greater support for those working to ensure an adequate food supply.

The First Lady called on Nigerians to embrace responsible food consumption and sustainable agricultural practices as part of efforts to build a more resilient food system.

“Let us support our farmers, reduce food waste, and promote sustainable practices that will ensure access to safe and nutritious food for every family,” she said.

Expressing optimism about Nigeria’s food security prospects, Mrs Tinubu said sustained investment in agricultural development, innovation and responsible food management would help the country address its food security challenges.

“With sustained commitment, we can build a food-secure nation and create a healthier future for generations to come,” she added.

She wished Nigerians a happy World Food Day 2026, reiterating that ensuring every family has access to adequate, safe and nutritious food requires collective responsibility.
