Plateau attacks: IGP Disu to visit state, assess security situation

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, is expected to visit Plateau State on Wednesday as part of efforts to strengthen security and prevent further attacks following a recent wave of violence across parts of the state.

 

At least 20 people have reportedly been killed in separate attacks by gunmen in several Plateau communities over the past week.

 

The Plateau State Police Command announced the planned visit in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, on Tuesday.

 

According to the command, the visit is aimed at “strengthening security collaboration, assessing police formations, and engaging key stakeholders in the state.”

 

Disu is expected to arrive at the Jos Airport at 9:30am on Wednesday before paying a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang at 10:30am.

 

His itinerary also includes an engagement at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, at noon and an inspection visit to the Police Staff College, Jos, at 3pm.

 

On Thursday, September 17, the IGP is scheduled to inspect the Plateau State Police Headquarters in Jos before departing for the airport at 2pm.

 

The visit comes days after reported attacks in communities in Mangu Local Government Area on September 12 and an attack at Dungus Junction, Kuru, in Jos South Local Government Area on September 13, which reportedly resulted in deaths and injuries.

 

The police said the IGP’s visit would provide an opportunity to engage government officials, traditional rulers and other security stakeholders on measures to restore peace and strengthen security across the state.

 

The command urged media organisations to deploy reporters and cameramen to cover the official engagements.
