Osun Peace Commission Receives 10 Petitions Over Disputes

The Osun State Commission of Inquiry on Disturbance of Public Peace has received 10 petitions arising from various disputes across the state.

 

The commission disclosed this on Monday during its inaugural sitting at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Osun State Government Secretariat, Abere.

 

The sitting was attended by petitioners, respondents, lawyers and other interested parties.

 

According to a statement signed by the Information Officer, Ministry of Justice, Ope Bello, the Chairman of the commission, Justice Adekunle Adeigbe (retd.), said the petitions bordered on chieftaincy matters, land disputes and other disagreements capable of disturbing public peace.

 

Adeigbe assured the parties of the commission’s commitment to fairness, impartiality and due process throughout the proceedings.

 

He explained that the commission would not make final determinations on the disputes but would investigate the issues and transmit its findings and recommendations to the Osun State Executive Council for consideration and appropriate action.

 

The chairman urged petitioners and respondents to have confidence in the process, assuring them that all parties would be accorded a fair hearing.

 

He also called on stakeholders to allow the commission to carry out its mandate without interference, stressing that the proceedings would be conducted in accordance with its terms of reference.

 

The inaugural sitting marked the formal commencement of the commission’s assignment to investigate disputes and other matters relating to disturbance of public peace across Osun State.

 

Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier inaugurated the commission as part of efforts to address recurring violence, killings and threats to communal harmony in the state.

 

At the inauguration, Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, charged members of the commission to conduct their assignment with courage, impartiality and integrity.

 

He urged them to allow evidence to guide their findings, remain fair to all parties and operate strictly within the provisions of the law.
