Jonathan disclosed this in a post on his X handle, describing Koroma as his “dear friend and brother.”
He said Nigeria had been Koroma’s “home away from home” for more than two years, adding that he was grateful the country had provided him with friendship, support and solidarity during the period.
Jonathan said he had worked with others to encourage dialogue and engagement with the Sierra Leonean authorities to help facilitate Koroma’s safe and dignified return.
“As we say farewell today, I am particularly happy that he is returning home to Freetown,” Jonathan said.
He wished Koroma a safe journey and expressed hope that his return would bring renewed hope and reconciliation to him, his family and the people of Sierra Leone.
Koroma served as Sierra Leone’s president from 2007 to 2018 before leaving the country for Nigeria in January 2024 after he was charged with treason and other offences over the November 2023 attacks in Freetown.
The Sierra Leonean government discontinued the criminal proceedings against Koroma in July 2026, with the Attorney-General’s office stating that the case was no longer before the court and that he was free to return home.
Koroma had initially travelled to Nigeria after receiving permission from Sierra Leonean judicial authorities to undergo medical treatment but remained in the country for more than two years.
His return followed an announcement by Sierra Leonean Vice President Mohamed Jalloh that Koroma would return home in the spirit of peace and national cohesion.
