US Troops Withdrawal: Nigerian Military Explains Decision

The Nigerian military has explained that the planned withdrawal of about 200 United States troops from Nigeria is part of the evolving nature of the security partnership between both countries.

 

The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the deployment of the US personnel earlier in 2026 was tied to limited operational and counterterrorism activities.

 

Uba explained that while the main body of the US troops is expected to leave Nigeria by late September, elements of the partnership, particularly intelligence cooperation, training and information sharing, will continue.

 

He stressed that the Nigerian Armed Forces remained primarily responsible for the defence of the country and the protection of its citizens.

 

According to him, the cooperation with the United States is aimed at strengthening the capabilities of Nigerian security forces through intelligence sharing, training and other forms of technical support.

 

He added that the partnership had contributed to efforts to combat terrorism and other transnational security threats.

 

“The decision to withdraw the 200 troops from Nigeria is part of the evolving nature of that engagement,” Uba said.

 

A smaller US advisory and intelligence team is expected to remain in Nigeria after the main contingent leaves.
