Osun guber: Tinubu should resign, not EFCC chair — SDP’s Adebayo

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Adebayo made the call while speaking with journalists after an event in Abuja on Thursday.

The EFCC had frozen the state government’s account domiciled with First Bank days before the August 15 Osun governorship election, citing an investigation into alleged suspicious transactions involving state funds.

The commission had said it was investigating the state government over the alleged handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and Federal Account Allocation Committee allocations.

However, President Tinubu, through his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday directed the EFCC to vacate the court order freezing the account.

The development followed calls in some quarters for the resignation of the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, over the timing and circumstances surrounding the account freeze.

Reacting, Adebayo argued that the EFCC chairman should not be held responsible, insisting that President Tinubu should take responsibility because the ultimate responsibility for the actions of government agencies rests with him.

“Well, the person who should resign is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I don’t have enough evidence to suggest that the EFCC chairman should resign. The only person who is at fault here is the President himself because the EFCC is a very difficult place to work,” Adebayo said.

He maintained that the circumstances surrounding the freezing of the account warranted accountability at the highest level rather than the removal of the EFCC chairman.
